Byju’s flagship learning app has been removed from the Google Play Store following defaults in payments to Amazon Web Services (AWS), which powers the app. According to industry sources quoted by PTI, the app’s removal is tied to ongoing financial difficulties faced by the company. Although the primary app is no longer available on Android, it remains accessible on Apple’s App Store. Other Byju’s apps like the Premium Learning app and Exam Prep app are still available on Google Play.

What the App Offered
The now-delisted learning app served students from classes 4 to 12, offering content in math, science, and social studies. It also catered to aspirants preparing for competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and IAS. Its absence from Android may disrupt learning for thousands of students relying on it for exam preparation and school curricula.

Insolvency Proceedings Add to Woes
The company, managed by Think and Learn Pvt. Ltd., is now under the administration of an Insolvency Resolution Professional. The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) initiated the insolvency proceedings after appeals from investors, including Glas Trust, which represents lenders. The professional now oversees financial operations, including pending payments to vendors like AWS.

Allegations of Fund Diversion
Adding fuel to the fire, Byju’s is entangled in legal issues involving its U.S. subsidiary, Byju’s Alpha. The subsidiary has accused founder Byju Raveendran, his co-founder spouse Divya Gokulnath, and former executive Anita Kishore of diverting $533 million in borrowed funds. Raveendran has dismissed these claims, stating they are part of a planned attack led by Glas Trust.

Founder’s Vision for ‘Byju’s 3.0’
Despite the financial crisis and legal setbacks, Raveendran is not backing down. He recently hinted at a potential revival of the company under the banner of ‘Byju’s 3.0,’ signaling plans for a strategic shift or reinvention. However, given the scale of current issues, the path to recovery remains uncertain.

Stay tuned as the story continues to unfold in India’s most high-profile edtech saga.
