Meta introduced Meta AI to WhatsApp in April 2024, with the goal of improving user experience and functionality.
WhatsApp is currently developing a message summarisation feature, powered by Meta AI, to help users quickly understand long conversations in personal chats, groups, and channels.

WhatsApp Working On Message Summarization Feature
The summarisation feature has already been rolled out in WhatsApp Beta, according to a WABeta report.
The tool will generate private summaries of unread messages, especially useful for busy group chats or channels.
A button will appear when a conversation has many unread messages, allowing users to request a summary.
The request will be processed using Meta’s Private Processing technology, which securely handles content without letting WhatsApp, Meta, or any third party access the messages.
The summarised content is sent directly to the user’s device, and no message content is stored or retained during the process.
Though the system has robust privacy safeguards and is partially open-sourced for security reviews, the summarisation feature won’t be available in chats where Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled.
This restriction is not due to a security flaw, but out of respect for users who opt out of AI-based tools in certain chats.
The feature will appear across individual chats, groups, and channels, offering a quick way to regain context while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
The summarisation tool is expected to be included in a future WhatsApp update.
WhatsApp Also Launches Advanced Chat Privacy Feature
WhatsApp has also launched a new Advanced Chat Privacy feature for users wanting greater control over group chats.
This builds on existing privacy tools like disappearing messages and chat locks, and adds new options to:
- Disable chat exports
- Prevent media from saving automatically
- Block use of messages with external AI tools
Once activated, Advanced Chat Privacy applies to all members of the chat.
To enable it, users must open the chat, tap the name at the top, and select the new privacy option.
Meta designed this setting with sensitive conversations in mind, particularly where participants may not know each other well.
The aim is to give users greater peace of mind by keeping their content confined to the app and under their control.
