By permitting the use of a single charger for numerous devices, this regulation will streamline charging and cut down on electronic waste.

India To Make USB-C Charging Connector Compulsory

Beginning in 2026, laptops are subject to the rule.

As per reports, wearables and basic phones will remain unaffected for the time being. All device makers will shortly receive instructions from the Union IT ministry to utilize the same kind of charging port.

As to the sources mentioned in the report, smartphones and tablets would be required to have USB-C connections starting in June 2024.

However, smartwatches, headphones, and entry-level phones are not yet included.

We all know about the 2022 European Union regulation that aims to reduce waste and save money. As per the order from the European Union, from autumn 2024, Apple will have to change the charger for its iPhones and will have to introduce a single charging port for most electronic devices.

Compared to Europe, India is granting manufacturers an additional six months to comply, giving them more time to make the changeover.

For noncompliance with the Consumer Affairs Ministry’s recommendation to use Type-C ports on all devices, penalties are in place.

Manufacturers Free To Adopt USB-C Connectors For Basic Phones

Although manufacturers are free to adopt USB-C connectors for their basic phones, they are not obligated to do so. Supply chains will run more smoothly, clutter will be reduced, and money will be saved by standardizing USB-C charging connectors.

By lowering the quantity of chargers that are thrown away, the change benefits the environment.

Apple decided to fully transition its iPhone series starting with the iPhone 15 to USB Type-C ports due to European standards regulations. Prior to now, every iPhone made by the American company used its exclusive lightning port.

Because USB Type-C has faster speeds than lightning cords, switching has also made data transfer easier.

Apple has restricted access to this fast transfer rate to Pro models only, though.
